pattern: little hands fingerless gloves

As part of updating my branding and web site, I'm also tech editing a number of my current knitting patterns and designs and re-posting them here on the blog.

These little fingerless gloves are one of my absolute faves. I've been designing and re-making fingerless gloves for about as long as I've been knitting. They are my go-to cool weather accessory. I know there are lots of people who find them useless. Trust me, when I did shows, I had people scoff at them and say: "Why would anyone want to wear gloves without covering their fingers?"

But as many people that have mocked them, there are just as many who have loved them. They're perfect for driving in the car on cold days. They're perfect for typing on the computer in chilly office spaces. They're perfect for guitar players or photographers, who's job requires they have access to their fingers. These are all feedback I've heard from customers throughout the years. The list goes on.

My girls have grown up seeing me knit these gloves for shows, for custom order or retail shops, so one day they asked me to make some for them, too. Hence, these little hands gloves were born!

If you're like me and love these little gloves, here's the formula I use if you want make them, too!

Little Hands Fingerless Gloves Pattern

Yarn: The yarn I used in these photos is a lovely one-of-a-kind, hand-painted alpaca-wool blend yarn spun by Larkspur Funny Farm that I purchased a long time ago. However, any sport weight wool or wool blend yarn will work nicely, too. Need approximately 60 yards to make a child-size pair.

Needles: US Size 6 (4.0 mm) double pointed needles

Size: Fits child hands ages 2-6 years

Directions for knitting the gloves:

  • CO 36 stitches (using 4mm dpns)
  • knit 1×1 rib for 5cm
  • knit 1 round even

For thumb gusset:

  • k4, place marker (pm), m1, k1, m1, pm, k to end of round
  • k round
  • k4, slip marker (sm), m1, k3, m1, sm, k to end of round
  • k round
  • k4, place 5 stitches between the markers on scrap yarn (remove the markers), co1 stitch (I use the thumb cast-on method for this) and join round on the next stitch. K to the end of the round.

  • Continue st st pattern until piece measures 9cm from the cast-on edge.
  • k 1×1 rib for 4 rounds
  • Bind off

Make thumb:

  • Place the 5 stitches on the scrap yarn back onto one dpn, and pick up 6 additional stitches around the thumb hole spread evenly using 2 more dpns (11 stitches)
  • k 2 rounds
  • Bind off thumb
  • Weave in all ends and work the second pair the same way.
