pattern: doll & me hats
One of the reasons I decided to take a step back from markets this year is because my girls ask me to knit them a lot of things. I have to admit that, although I loved that they wanted me to make them hats, gloves, or stuffed animals, when I was in the midst of market prep, I dreaded it! Horrible mom moment, but among the hustle of making enough inventory for a big show, having to divert precious waking hours to anything else was hard.
Now with only selfish knitting and knitting for my loved ones on my agenda, I can devote as much time as I need to perfecting their wishes.
My girls are into their dolls - and dressing up their dolls in matching clothes is really a thing! I kid you not! So matching winter hats was naturally a given.
Here's the formula I used to make these Doll & Me Hats, if you want to make them, too!
Doll & Me Hat Pattern:
Yarn: I used Yarnspirations Caron Cupcakes, but any DK weight yarn will also work. I liked the Caron Cupcakes yarn for this project because the yardage was generous - one 244 yard skein made 2 child-sized hats and 1 doll-sized hat! Plus, it came with a cute pom-pom which was a bonus because who doesn't love poms!
Needles: US Size 8 (5.0 mm) circulars (16 inches) and double pointed needles
Gauge: 22 sts = 4 inches on 5.0 mm needles in 2x2 rib
Size: Fits child heads ages 4-12 years and 18 inch dolls (pictured in this post are American Girl brand dolls)
Free pattern for child hat:
- CO 76 stitches using circulars; place marker and join to knit on the round.
- K2, P2 (2x2 rib) to end of round.
- Repeat rib pattern until hat measures 10 inches from the cast on edge.
- Start the crown decrease: *(K2tog, P2tog) repeat * to end of round.
- Next round, *K2tog repeat * to end of round, switching to double pointed needles when stitches become fewer.
- Repeat decreases until 6 stitches remain.
- Cut yarn, leaving a 6 inch tail and weave the end into the remaining stitches to close the hole.
- Attach pom pom to finish the hat and weave in the remaining ends.
Free pattern for doll hat:
- CO 40 stitches on the double pointed needles; place marker and join to knit on the round.
- K1, P1 (1x1 rib) to end of round.
- Repeat rib pattern until hat measures 3.5 inches from the cast on edge.
- Start the crown decrease: *K2tog repeat * to end of round.
- Repeat decreases until 6 stitches remain.
- Cut yarn, leaving a 4 inch tail and weave the end into the remaining stitches to close the hole.
- Attach pom pom to finish the hat and weave in the remaining ends.
